Billboard advertising statistics
Billboards are the largest part of out-of-home (OOH) advertising, but trade bodies report OOH as a whole. OOH also covers transit, street furniture such as bus shelters, and place-based screens in venues like malls, gyms and cinemas.
US OOH is growing faster in 2026 than in 2025. Revenue rose 7.1% in Q1 2026 and 10.7% in Q2, the first quarter above $3 billion. By our count the first half came to about $5.28 billion, up 9.1%. In 2025 the full year grew only 3.6%.
Billboards are the slow part of the mix. US billboard revenue grew 2.3% in 2025. Transit grew 9.8% and street furniture 5.6%. In Q1 2026 billboards picked up to 4.8%, but transit grew 18%. In Q2 2026 transit grew 23.9%. Airports, rail and bus networks are taking a bigger share of growth.
OAAA's own documents do not fully agree on 2025 transit growth. The March 2026 press release says 9.2%. The Facts & Figures report published in April says 9.8%. We use the later report and flag the gap here.
OAAA does not publish billboard revenue in dollars on its free pages. Its full format split sits in a members-only report.

Out-of-home advertising revenue by year
OAAA has published US OOH revenue every year since before 2009. The series shows a long, slow climb, a deep fall in 2020 and a full recovery by 2022.
US OOH revenue reached a record $9.46 billion in 2025. That is about 10.5% above the 2019 level of $8.6 billion, by our calculation from OAAA's rounded series. Over the ten years from 2015, revenue grew by an average of 2.7% a year.
The pandemic hit OOH harder than most media. Revenue fell to $6.1 billion in 2020, back to the level of 2010. It took until 2022 to pass the 2019 figure.
OOH is seasonal. Q1 is the smallest quarter and Q2 the largest. In 2025 Q1 brought $1.98 billion and Q2 $2.86 billion. OAAA does not publish a Q4 dollar figure, but full-year revenue minus the Q3 year-to-date total gives about $2.48 billion.

Digital billboard (DOOH) statistics
Digital out-of-home (DOOH) covers screens rather than printed posters. It includes digital billboards, transit screens and place-based screens. Programmatic DOOH is the share bought automatically through ad platforms.
Digital is where the growth is. US DOOH revenue grew 10.5% in 2025, almost three times the market's 3.6%. In Q2 2026 it grew 18.5% and took 38.4% of revenue, about $1.21 billion by our calculation. Its share rose about 2.4 points in a year.
The UK is much further ahead. Digital took 67% of UK OOH revenue in 2025 and 68% in Q2 2026, according to Outsmart. That is about 30.7 points more than the US share. A likely reason is the mix of sites. US OOH includes a large base of printed roadside billboards, as the operator data below shows.
Most digital screens are still bought directly. OAAA says programmatic made up 30% of US DOOH sales in 2025. A separate measure from the World Out of Home Organization (WOO) puts the US programmatic market at $545.5 million in 2025, a 15.9% penetration rate. The two figures use different bases and should not be compared directly.
WOO's first global study found $1.339 billion of programmatic DOOH spend in 2025, 7.0% of all DOOH. That implies total worldwide DOOH spend of about $19.1 billion. The US alone made up about 40.7% of the programmatic total.

Billboard advertising effectiveness
Free, independent effectiveness data for billboards is scarce. The figures here are consumer surveys. None measures sales or profit, so treat them as attitude data.
Younger adults respond more to billboards. YouGov found 48% of US Gen Z and Millennial adults recommend products they have seen on billboards or posters. That falls to 34% for Gen X and 23% for Baby Boomers. Gen Z is about twice as likely as Boomers to say so.
Billboards often lead to a phone search. 54% of Gen Z and 53% of Millennials told YouGov they often search for products on their phone after seeing an OOH ad.
OAAA and The Harris Poll report that 73% of US consumers view DOOH ads favourably and 76% say one recently prompted them to act. OAAA is the US OOH trade body and does not publish the sample size or dates, so these are the weakest figures on this page.
For an effectiveness measure built on profit rather than attitudes, see the econometric data on our TV advertising statistics page. For another physical channel with response-rate data, see direct mail marketing statistics.

Billboard share of total ad spend
OOH is a small slice of total advertising in both the US and the UK. The share is higher in the UK, where it is measured by a different body.
OOH took 2.3% of US media spend in 2025, in a $406 billion core media market, according to OAAA. Most of it is local. Local advertisers bought 65% of US OOH sales. OAAA projects OOH sales to grow 3.7% a year over 2025 to 2029.
In the UK, OOH took about 3.1% of ad spend in 2025, by our calculation from AA/WARC data. UK spend was £1,426.3 million, of which digital was £954.6 million.
The two UK sources differ slightly. Outsmart reports £1.44 billion for 2025, up 2.6%. AA/WARC reports £1,426.3 million, up 2.3%. Outsmart collects revenue from its media owner members through PwC. AA/WARC estimates spend net of discounts across the whole market.
UK OOH is having a strong 2026. Revenue grew 15% in Q1 and 12.7% in Q2, about £743.8 million for the half. AA/WARC raised its 2026 OOH growth forecast from 3.1% in April to 7.6% in July. It expects growth to slow to 2.5% in 2027.

Billboard company results
The listed OOH operators report results in their filings. These figures cover each company's own business, not the whole market, but they come out quickly and are audited.
The operators grew more slowly than the OAAA market total in Q2 2026. Lamar, one of the largest outdoor advertising companies in North America, grew net revenue 6.5% to $616.7 million. It covers the whole US market, including many transit and place-based networks these firms do not run.
Lamar shows how much of US roadside inventory is still printed. It runs over 360,000 displays, but only over 5,700 are digital billboards, about 1.6% by our calculation.
At JCDecaux, which operates worldwide, digital was 42.8% of revenue in the first half of 2026. Billboards were only about 13.4% of its revenue and grew 0.8% organically. Its UK business grew 12.8%, close to Outsmart's 13.7% market figure for the half.

How these sources measure out-of-home advertising
Each source counts something different. Check the scope before you compare numbers.
OAAA's revenue totals are pro forma estimates for the whole US industry. They combine Miller Kaplan data, MediaRadar tracking and member company affidavits. They cover digital and static billboards, street furniture, transit, place-based and cinema. Some quarters leave out cinema detail when MediaRadar data is late.
OAAA's advertiser and category rankings come from MediaRadar alone. OAAA says MediaRadar under-reports OOH spend by about 30%. Use those dollar figures for ranking and trend, not as totals.
Outsmart's UK figures are revenue reported by its media owner members and collated by PwC. AA/WARC estimates total UK spend after discounts and before agency commission. That is why the two UK totals differ slightly.
WOO's programmatic figures come from 12 supply-side platforms reporting to PwC. They cover programmatic trading only. Company filings cover each operator's own sites and are reported in their own currencies. YouGov and Harris Poll figures are surveys of stated attitudes, not measured outcomes.
